I am fortunate to have trained in counseling psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where my doctoral training emphasized cultural competence in the domains of therapy practice, research, and academia. My clinical training and experience included conducting psychological assessments, consultation, and individual/couples/group therapy. I have a breadth of training in college counseling centers, community mental health, a state psychiatric hospital, and county mental health. These clinical experiences have provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the human experience and expertise in working with a diversity of clients.

Professional Interests & Expertise
My professional interests and expertise are in the area of multicultural psychology and issues of diversity (e.g., race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, culture). I conducted research examining the psychosociocultural experiences of Hmong American undergraduates and my doctoral dissertation examined racial microaggressions (a subtle form of racism) in therapy.

I have experience working with culturally diverse adults and adolescents in treating a range of issues that include interpersonal (relationship) issues, trauma, depression, bi-polar, grief and loss, cultural identity, career-related issues, and anxiety. Specific to college students, I have experience helping students work through academic stress/worry, relationship distress (peers and romantic), test anxiety, and navigating the college environment (particularly with first generation college students).

I enjoy working with psychology trainees and have experience in providing supervision through a cultural competence model.  During my doctoral training program, I taught graduate level counseling psychology courses and career exploration courses for first generation undergraduate students of color through a TRIO program.

Approach to Therapy: Interpersonal Process and Multicultural
I see myself as an integrationist who emphasizes an interpersonal process and multicultural approach to therapy. The multicultural approach I use in my work emphasizes understanding the person within their context. I believe that the therapeutic alliance is the cornerstone of every effective therapy relationship; therefore, I will ask you often for feedback about the therapy process. When a relationship of mutual trust and respect is present, it is then that honest dialogue and genuine feedback can help clients to grow beyond their problems and create change. In terms of treatment goals, I will collaborate with you to develop an individualized, meaningful, and effective coping strategies to work through your concerns. Interventions that I use come from cognitive-behavioral therapy, multicultural psychology, and mindfulness approach.
